Step-by-step guide to verifying a smartphone's IMEI number in India — what databases to check, what the results mean, and what red flags to walk away from.
Every smartphone sold or used in India has a unique 15-digit IMEI number. Checking it before buying a refurbished phone takes 2 minutes and can save you from buying a stolen, blacklisted, or counterfeit device.
What Is an IMEI Number?
IMEI stands for International Mobile Equipment Identity. It's a unique identifier assigned to every mobile device at manufacture. No two devices share the same IMEI (dual-SIM phones have two IMEIs). Indian telecom regulators use IMEI numbers to block stolen phones, so a blacklisted phone won't connect to any Indian network.
How to Find the IMEI
- Dial *#06# on any phone to display IMEI instantly
- Check Settings → About Phone → IMEI Information (Android)
- Check Settings → General → About → IMEI (iPhone)
- Check the original box barcode or the tray under the SIM card
How to Check IMEI in India
1. CEIR Portal (Government of India) The Central Equipment Identity Register (ceir.gov.in) is the official Indian government IMEI checker. Enter the IMEI and it will tell you if the device has been reported stolen or blocked by TRAI.
2. CheckMEND / Swappa (for imported phones) These global databases check if the device has been blacklisted internationally — useful for iPhones that may have been locked to a US/UK carrier.
3. Apple GSX / Coverage Check (for iPhones) Visit checkcoverage.apple.com and enter the serial number (linked to IMEI) to verify activation lock status and remaining warranty.
What the Results Mean
Clean IMEI — Not reported stolen, not blacklisted. Safe to buy (provided seller also discloses carrier lock status).
Blocked / Blacklisted — The device has been reported stolen or flagged by a carrier. Do not buy.
Activation Lock (iPhone) — The previous owner's Apple ID is still linked. The phone cannot be set up without that Apple ID — walk away immediately.
Unknown IMEI — Device may be counterfeit or very new. Request more documentation from seller.
What UsedStore Does Differently
UsedStore verifies every smartphone and tablet IMEI before listing. Listings carry an "IMEI Verified" badge when checked against CEIR and, for iPhones, against Apple's activation lock database. Our 10-day exchange policy covers any IMEI discrepancy discovered after purchase.
Red Flags to Walk Away From
- Seller refuses to provide IMEI before purchase
- IMEI shows as blocked on CEIR
- iPhone has activation lock (iCloud lock) active
- IMEI on the device doesn't match the IMEI on the box
- Very low price for a flagship model (stolen phones are sold cheap)
Verifying IMEI is the single most important step when buying a used or refurbished phone in India. It takes 2 minutes and costs nothing.
